McCartney Outstanding
The Dungannon Motor Club Night Rally was run on 5th October 1962 when 27 vehicles started from Dungannon. The route included The Rock, Sandholes, Tullyhogue, Coagh and Ballyronan, with a break for supper in Magherafelt. Five driving tests were encountered on this part of the route, particularly outstanding performances coming from Ronnie McCartney, Harold Hagan and Ted Hobson.
Starting the second half at mid-night, the competitors made their way through Draperstown, The Six Towns, and round Slieve Gullion to Pomeroy. Then it was off in the Ballygawley direction and finally back to Dungannon.
All ten sections were run on a regularity basis, timing by the sealed watch system, and not one competitor succeeded in avoiding penalty marks on the road. This of course is exactly what the organisers had hoped for.
